Wines that evoke a sense of place
Gracefulness is Power
Elegance is Complexity
Tension is Harmony
Martin Woods is hidden in the oak-forested Coast Range foothills near the town of McMinnville, a neighborhood advantageously influenced by cool Pacific ocean air. The winery is also the home of owner/winemaker, Evan Martin.
A Martin Woods wine promotes the notions of graceful power and elegant complexity — a beautifully balanced tension of opposites that can only result from the combination of great terroir, observant farming, and meticulous, patient winemaking.
Evan continues to push the boundaries of what Willamette Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir can and should be, while simultaneously exploring limited productions of Syrah, Riesling and other varietals, each project inspired and informed by the truly benchmark wines of the Old World.

Jessie James Pinot Noir
Jessie James Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills
98+ - The 2021 Jessie James Vineyard sports a deeper ruby hue, although itʼs still clear, and itʼs fantastic now in the glass, opening with notes of black and red fruit, wild violets, piney herbs, and layered earth. Medium-bodied, with a lot of completeness, itʼs super-seamless in its structure, with ripe tannins, even, mouthwatering acidity, and a long finish.

98 - The 2022 Pinot Noir Jessie James Vineyard is rich and ruby-colored but transparent, beautiful in the glass, with a floral and ripe perfume offering notes of framboise, light herbal notes, wild fresh herbs, and a touch of dark black fruit coming through, with black raspberries and dark stones. On the palate, it has a rich tannin structure, a ton of clarity (as all of Evanʼs wines tend to express), and a long finish. It is going to benefit from more time.

Koosah Chadonnay
Koosah Vineyard, Eola-Amity Hills
96 - The 2022 Koosah Chardonnay is a bright yellow/silver color and is a touch more shy at this stage, with notes of smoky earth, white peach, lemon oil, and a white floral tone. Medium to full-bodied, it has lovely richness without weight and has exceptionally focused length.

95 - The 2022 Koosah is a bolder Chardonnay choice in the Martin Woods portfolio. The floral quality of its aromas balances the somewhat rich mouthfeel of its medium—to full-body palate. With that said, it maintains a vibrant energy and nice overall structure - balanced acidity - featuring notes of stone fruits, crispy apples, lemon peel, and herbs. There is a phenolic structure and a rich texture. This wine nails both.

The Rocks Syrah
The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, OR
98 - The Rocks Syrah is one of the most exciting domestic Syrahs, this wine beautifully showcases a well-crafted expression of the ‘classic’ funk of The Rocks. The deep umami notes come from the concentration of flavours in the berries due to the vines’ low yields. Notable aromas of green olives and peppers, violets, and meats complement those flavours. This Syrah includes 50% whole cluster and spends 40 days on the skins, enhancing its complexity and depth.”

96 - The 2022 Rocks Syrah boasts incredible structure and an earthy depth that adds layers of complexity. A touch of reductive character further enhances the wine’s unique personality, bringing it all together with fine-grained tannins and energetic acidity. The finish is long, with a lingering richness that makes this a Syrah you’ll want to return to, glass after glass.

“Evan Martin works like a mad scientist (I mean that in the best possible way), experimenting and tinkering with his small yet truly noteworthy portfolio. Moreover, the range of wines remains fairly priced for the quality and unique personality he packs into each bottle… The Martin Woods wines are pure, complex, lively, and seemingly deep beyond their years.”
